J Walkies Dog School: Building Bonds Between Pet Dogs and Their Owners

Updated: Nov 3, 2025

Welcome to J Walkies Dog School

My name is Jane Wood, and I am the proud owner of J Walkies and J Walkies Dog School. I have always had a deep love for dogs, having rescued and rehomed many throughout my life. My passion for dogs drives me to help pet owners create happy, calm, and fulfilled relationships with their furry friends.

The Importance of Positive Reinforcement

At J Walkies Dog School, my aim is to train pet dogs using positive reinforcement methods. This approach not only meets the needs of dogs but also helps their owners develop a strong bond with them. A well-trained dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog leads to a fulfilled owner.

J Walkies Dog School was founded in January 2023, after I completed the APDT foundation dog training course. I also volunteered at a dog school for 18 months to gain valuable experience. Following that, I completed the APDT Advanced Dog Training course, where I learned from fellow trainers, tutors, and speakers. I am a graduate member of the APDT, which means I adhere to their code of conduct regarding dog training and welfare. To maintain my qualifications, I complete at least 30 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) each year.

Continuous Learning

So far, I have achieved training in various areas, including agility for trainers, resource guarding, sound sensitivity, and reactive dog training. I am committed to expanding my knowledge through workshops, books, and webinars. Staying updated with the latest science and methods is crucial for providing the best training possible.

Building Strong Bonds

Building the bond between dog and owner is the foundation of effective training. Many training centres focus heavily on competitive aspects, which may not align with the needs of pet dog owners. I understand this firsthand, as I, too, prefer a more relaxed approach.

My classes and workshops are designed to be easily replicated at home. This allows owners to continue training independently or seek further support through additional classes. By doing so, we can achieve better and longer-lasting results.

Family Involvement in Training

At J Walkies Dog School, we believe training should involve the entire family. We encourage all family members, including well-behaved children, to participate in classes. This unity helps everyone "sing the same song" when it comes to training. Mixed messages can confuse dogs, leading to chaos and anxiety. Often, this confusion makes owners think they have a stubborn or unintelligent dog.

In reality, dogs are usually just confused about what is being asked of them.

Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

We lost our beloved Willow last year at 14 years old. Rescued at just nine months, she was once nervous and anxious, scared of her own shadow. Over time, she became what many described as the "best girl." She was obedient and calm, rarely needing a lead because she always walked at heel.

In her later years, Willow developed a remarkable ability to empathise with both humans and other dogs. She became a willing demonstrator in my classes, loving the attention and showing new pups how to behave. At 12 years old, she even learned clicker training! This experience reminded me that training and learning new skills is a lifelong commitment.

Refreshing the Basics

We often revisit the basics in our training sessions. Sometimes, we can become complacent and miss cues, inadvertently changing our approach without realising it. Regularly refreshing our foundational skills is essential for maintaining effective communication with our dogs.
