Recall is a fundamental behaviour that often gets forgotten for lots of different reasons. We end up with a dog that won’t return to you and not being able to let you puppy or dog roam freely.
Recall fails for a lot of reasons
We didn’t train it in the 1st place
Adolescence hits
We forget to reinforce it.
We keep calling and shouting and it just become ‘noise’.
We don’t proof it enough, we don’t build the behaviour with distractions
We blame ourselves and the dog.
Without the knowledge how do we expect to succeed?
Behaviours can easily slip and we either forget steps or add wrong steps in.
Sometimes you just need to go back to the basics and start again. This is not a failure this is a good owner doing their best.
We need to set our dogs up to succeed, rather than accept failure. To accomplish success with our pet we have to build behaviours slowly and consistently, reward success and persist until the unwanted behaviour is gone.
Then we have to carry on rewarding to guarantee that the behaviour sticks for life.
Here at J Walkies Dog School we can give you the knowledge, help and advice to achieve great recall, whatever stage you are at with your dog, puppy, adolescent, new rehomed or rescue or an older dog where the behaviour has failed
