Loose Lead Walking

Here at J Walkies Dog School we believe Loose lead walking is a must to have a happy, calm, relaxed and fulfilled dog and owner.

This is a crucial part of any puppy’s and dog’s training for many reasons.

The main reason  owners want their dogs to walk on a loose lead is that they don’t want to be pulled from pillar to post, or to be dragged along on a walk.  This is not an enjoyable walk for dog or owner. In extreme circumstances this can lead anxiety about going out, and the dog no longer being walked. This can become a frustration for the dog and lead to further behavioural issues.

If your dog is pulling on their lead while walking, it can put a lot of pressure on your body as well your dogs  which can cause injury and long term damage to both parties.

If your dog is reactive,  a tight lead will add to the anxiety for dog and owner, stacking up stress levels and triggers making reaction more likely.

A good loose lead walking technique can help alleviate this.

It is really important to start your walk with loose lead walking, start with the correct relaxed frame of mind for you and your dog will make the walk easier and more fulfilling.  It will also give you time to work on other enrichment goals, or just enjoy a stroll. Just having a loose lead when your dog has expelled a lot of their excess energy is not the answer.

There are lots of different techniques you can learn to use to achieve this, the aim is to give you an enjoyable experience on your walks with your dog.

J Walkies Dog School can help you with Loose Lead walking whether it is on one of our regular workshops, our classes that incorporate loose lead walking or a 1-2-1 training package or training walks.

Our aim is to get the walks with your dog you dreamed of. Having a happy, calm, relaxed and fulfilled dog and owner.
