Loose Lead Walking

                                                                        Part 2

Last week I covered why Looses Lead walking was so important and how you and your dog can benefit from it. Below are a few tips on how to get started.

Loose lead walking is only achievable if you have your dog’s focus to begin with.

To enable you to do this here is a couple of things to try.

Have plenty of treats and start where there are no distractions so that you are setting you and your dog up for success.

You can use a few focus exercises including look/focus/ watch,  motivational touch, backwards walking and yo-yo recall.

Having  your dog’s focus on you will help you to have your dog to walk at side of you with a loose lead so much more easily.

Once you have gotten your dog focus you can the start walking with your dog at the side of you. Remember lots of treats to maintain focus.  As training progresses the treating will become intermittent.

You need to start with little or no distractions, once you have built in this behaviour you can start and add in some small distractions and build up your’s and your dog’s relaxed confidence in loose lead walking.

If you are needing some help advice and support with your loose lead walking then J Walkies Dog School can help you with our Workshops, 1-2-1 training or training walks
